Dan Muncaster ’21
A History and German double major from Illinois who finished second in his class, Dan won a Rotary Scholarship and a German Academic Exchange Fellowship. He will spend next year at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin working towards a Master’s of Public Policy. After spending the pre-COVID months of 2020 in Germany, where he spent significant free time volunteering to do refugee aid and on his own speaking with people who identified with Alternative für Deutschland about their views, Dan jumped on the CHGS with gusto. In the fall of 2020, he too did outstanding work in XH 415 and participated in the MAPP. As a Presidential Fellow in the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress, Dan conducted research on the undercutting of democratic norms in the US Department of Justice. This research will be published this summer. Inspired by this subject, Dan’s honors thesis, completed this spring semester, explained how principles of liberalism were used to justify the genocide of Native Americans in California. Also this spring, as a student in HI 463, “Race, Ethnicity, Nation, and Gender,” Dan conducted research into the recent history of Army policy regulating extremism. He recently began an internship with the Foundation for the Defense of Democracy.
