2nd Lieutenant AnnMarie Moolenaar ’21, Military Intelligence
A History and Philosophy double major from Michigan, AnnMarie commissioned as a military intelligence officer and earned a Fulbright UK scholarship. After participating in a CHGS trip to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum as a plebe (freshman), AnnMarie has been involved in nearly every CHGS program, and like 2LT Ogburn, was a pathbreaker. She was an outstanding performer in XH 415, co-deputy Cadet-in-Charge of the Joint Service Academies Mass Atrocity Prevention Symposium (JSAMAPS) in 2018 and co-Cadet-in-Charge for three years since. She was a leading contributor to the MAPP this fall. This past summer she too contributed to a revision of the digital leadership case study of LTG (R) Roméo Dallaire. She participated in the summer 2018 CHGS-supported study in the Czech Republic to examine resistance to Nazism and the Holocaust in Czechoslovakia. One year later, she was one of two cadets to take part in the Center’s first trip to Rwanda to study memorialization and reconciliation. As a Fulbright scholar, she will attend the London School of Economics to research the roles of institutions in conflict management, conflict resolution, conflict transformation, and peacebuilding. Her thesis topic will be a critical examination of effective policy approaches to interventions in violent conflicts. Between July and September 2021, she will serve as an intern, supported by the CHGS, at the US Institute for Peace. AnnMarie will work in the Program on Nonviolent Action, which studies the role of nonviolent movements in conflict prevention and resolution, where she will research how to build and enhance the strategic planning skills of grassroots peacebuilders.
