Cadets in Dr. David Frey’s XH 415, “Genocide and Mass Killing” class concluded their semester by conducting a multi-day Table Top Exercise in which they responded to a mass atrocity scenario in South Sudan. In preparation for this exercise, cadets studied the history of South Sudan and its current affairs, and they familiarized themselves with important political actors and joint staff positions. One of the primary texts was a 70-page situation assessment of South Sudan, co-authored by Cadet Samir Streatfield and Dr. Frey. After excelling XH 405, Dr. Frey arranged for CDT Streatfield to be a summer intern at the US Army War College. During the 2017 summer, CDT Streatfield spent five weeks working with the Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute (PKSOI). He collaborated with scholars and officials from the Army, USAID, and the Africa Desk of the National Security Council to prepare the core of the situation assessment. Dr. Frey sent the final document to AFRICOM and the War College, which forwarded it to USAID and the State Department, where it will now be used, in the words of Mr. Ryan McCannell of the War College, as “a great reference for USG [US government] and NGO [Non-governmental organizations] colleagues who are new to the country or need a refresher on the security background.”
A double major in History and Physics and currently ranked in the top five members of his class, Cadet Streatfield is a standout. He will compete for national scholarships during the 2018-19 year.
