“I cannot be a bystander.” This is the lesson Cadet Nette Monaus has taken from the study of genocide and mass atrocity. “Through CHGS programs, I learned that we all have a role in caring for others and preventing genocide, war crimes, or other mass atrocities. Understanding this, I strive to be a leader who instills in others the courage to stand strong as a defender of human rights and to protect against egregious acts against humanity. I aim to be the dynamic leader who combines understanding, empathy, and action, advancing the cause of atrocity prevention.”
As a plebe (freshman), Cadet Monaus traveled to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and soon after teamed up with Cadet Askew to create the Joint Service Academies Mass Atrocity Prevention Symposium (JSAMAPS). Nette was co-lead planner and organizer, and like Cadet Askew received special recognition from Acting Secretary of the Army Patrick Murphy and an Army Achievement Medal. She is the co-lead for the third iteration of the JSAMAPS, which will occur in April 2018.
Cadet Monaus, in her year as a Schwarzman Scholar in China, will earn a Master’s in Global Affairs. She plans to study how secondary education can be used to promote prevention strategies. Thereafter, she will pursue an Army career and eventually intends to become a diplomat working in atrocity prevention.
